In 1192 A.D. the current Kamakura Shogunate emperor gave the Minamonto leader the title of Shogun (which had the same powers as a military dictator). The emperor still ruled, but the real center of power is where the military headquarters were in Kamakura.
In the 1100s, Japan's most powerful clans fought for power. After 30 years of fighting, the Minamoto family finally won. The mongols tried to attack, but this army was strong enough to turn them away. Unfortunately the Samurai were angry when the government failed to pay them for their services which tributed to the downfall of the Kamakura Shogun's power and importance.
